1980 XS650 Valve Cover and Points Cover Cleanup
Replacement Points Cover from Mike's XS. Also replaced the Valve Cover nuts.
Original Points Cover.
Valve Covers after running through the ultra sonic cleaner, a light sanding with 400 grit sandpaper, rubbing with steel wool, and then hand polishing with metal polish. I could have gotten a much shinier look with a polish wheel, but for now I just wanted to remove the corrosion.
I didn't use any solution just water. The solution that comes with the ultrasonic cleaner states that it may discolor alloys so I have been reluctant to use it on anything I care about. I used the heat setting and ran it two cleaning cycles -- a total of 16 minutes.
The covers turned out nice. What kind of solution did you use in the ultrasonic cleaner? Was it just water or did you also use an additive?
