Early 1970s Maico brochure from my files
I have been going through some of my father's old dealership papers. This was always the definitive Maico for me. Horsepower listed at 54. And a 91 mm diameter piston.
I don't know. It wasn't a good MX bike. They advertised it at a cross-country bike, but it was too much of a beast and not reliable enough for cross country. It worked very well on the local SoCal TT tracks, but it was never marketed to that segment like the Bultacos and Ossas were.
I used to race at the old el Toro raceway in oc California. Before it became lion country safari a guy had a 501 hed start in like 3rd gear and just smoke em to the first turn never shifted just shot a 50 foot roost it was awsome

was the 501 made because of something to do with hillclimb rules back in the day?

Deletethe hillclimb rules was "over 500cc" but I don't want to research it.

ReplyDeleteI remember watching one at the original Perris Raceway in SoCal. It was so different from the other bikes.
